A family came to Wilets Architecture looking to update their midcentury modern residence in the Carderock Springs neighborhood of Bethesda. A new master bedroom suite was designed to extend the house in a straightforward way, but a new home office would have to squeeze inside their irregular lot’s building setback lines. These tight constraints inspired the uplifted butterfly roof that floats over the glass enclosed private office, perched lightly above the hilly, forested site.
